Who Am I? I am a Champion

Write on a piece of paper, “Who am I? I am a champion” and keep it on your desk or paste it on the wall. This will fire you up. Charge you for the whole day. It can charge you up for the whole life.

Modified Speech of Football Coach giving speech to a Champion Team Before Football Match:

Today, I am honored to tell you something about how to become a champion, am more honored to take you onto the field of life’s battle. There is another honor, that I want you to realize an answer to a simple question,

WHO AM I ? I'M A CHAMPION !

That's right, and I need you to remember this “All throughout my life, I will conquer what has not been conquered by many; defeat will not be in my creed. I will believe what others have doubted. I will always endeavor the prestige, honor, and respect of my family and nation. I have trained my mind and my body will follow.

WHO AM I ? I'M A CHAMPION !

I will acknowledge the fact that circumstances will not always give me all things that I need to win, but I will never surrender. Weakness will not be in my heart. I will look to my people, to my parents who have brought me into this world and those, to the teachers who have trained me, to my friends who have helped me and I will draw strength from them.

WHO AM I ? I'M A CHAMPION !

I will gladly go out into the field of life, and I will move, defend and do everything that I can do, and I will reach my field of battle by any means that are available to me. And when I get there, I will arrive violently. I will rip apart and throw away the weaknesses from inside because my weaknesses cannot stop me.

WHO AM I ? I'M A CHAMPION!

To my side, I have My Army, an army that has been with me through my ups and downs, through their sacrifice, blood, sweat and tears. Never will I let them fall. Never will I let them down and I will never leave a weakness behind, because life does not know my heart.

WHO AM I ? I'M A CHAMPION !

No one can deny me, no one can defy me, and no one will tell me who and what I am and what I can be. My belief will change my world, it has moved continents and countries, and put man on the moon, and I will carry myself through this battle. It’s nothing in front of my beliefs and my courageous heart.

WHO AM I ? I'M A CHAMPION !

‘Defeat’, ‘Failure’, ‘Weakness’ those are not my words, I don't understand those definitions, I don't understand when things go wrong, I don't understand mistakes, but I do understand this: I understand victory, and I understand never surrendering. No matter how bad things go, my heart and my mind will carry my body when my limbs are too weak.

WHO AM I ? I'M A CHAMPION !

Today will be that day, not tomorrow, not next week, but right now, right here, in your house, and in your home. I will fight this battle and show the world.

WHO AM I ? I'M A CHAMPION !

History will remember me, and I will not have to worry about him being kind. I will define myself. I will write my own praises. And no one will tell me what I can and cannot be. I will never go home, not without giving everything I have got.

COZ

WHO AM I ? I'M A CHAMPION !

WHO AM I ? I'M A CHAMPION !

WHO AM I ? I'M A CHAMPION !

Write on a piece of paper, “Who am I? I am a champion”. Or take a print out of this and put it in your table. Read whenever you feel low. It will charge you up. All the best for whatever endeavor you are making in life. Whether its exams, family problems, health problems, or anything else.

How to Train Your memory – A CA’s perspective and Experience

Version 1.0
Introduction:

The purpose for writing this chapter is to help students get best out of their brain powers and abilities. By applying very simple techniques, the results can be unimaginable. I have experienced it myself, hence I would like to share it will all. It can help to all, not just students.
I have always been amused by the amazing powers our brain and mind has. From time to time, I have come across many such startling articles and readings which says a lot about the hidden potential of the brain and how much human brain can remember and recall. The lessons and learning are compiled in this file for the benefit of all.

Process of memory and memory recall: I had come across an explanation for memory recalls and the method by which everyone of us can develop better memory slowly and gradually. Here it goes.

(a)    Commanding the brain at the start of reading session: First of all, take an example that you are reading a story book, now at the time of reading story book, you are just enjoying it and not trying to memorise it, right? At the end of the story, you will just be able to narrate it in few minutes to someone. Cool.
Now take another example, you are starting to read a story book and you are told by someone that at the end of the day when you finish with this book, there is going to be a quiz contest and the questions will be asked from the given story. Now what happens? Your alertness rises, you will command your brain while picking up the book that “look, there gonna be competition at the end of the day. I have to compete, you have to be alert and remember the things as much as you can” As a result what happens is, you gonna remember more than first case, obviously.
Lesson: We have got a lesson to learn, before starting to read something, just remind and alert you brain. “Boss, this is important thing I am doing, I need to remember as much as possible. So do your duty faithfully. Am not a fool who is feeding you all day long.” Lol. The conversation may go as you may like. Point is that you should convey to your brain what you need to.

    (b)   Training your mind to recall. Asking questions to the brain at the end: What I have observed from what little experiences I had during long span of studying are as follows. Sometimes, what I used to do is that I used to keep on reading for hours and hours in a day (approx. 8-10 hours). I never used to try to recall anything, (because I knew I would have forgotten most of the things and if I fail to recall,  I will loose confidence, so I never used to try to recall L, stupid isn’t it?). Ok, I thought for a while and asked myself, “is it going to work this way in long term? If I am not able to recall something at the end of the day (at least a summary of what I have learned or read), then will I be able to make through the vast portion of CA. Is this method going to work? I have got limited time and much more to study. What should I do?

Storage and Retrieval:

I searched and asked people about this. I came across a nice explanation for how human brain’s recall process works. The explanation goes like this “There are two aspects of memory, 1. Storage (Which is almost infinite for the life time) 2. Retrieval Process (which is on an average same for all but when we train it to improve, it can be improved to the extent of memory championship winner).

Recalling Process and ways to improve the recalling process:

Now let us understand the memory recall process. Whenever we try to read, understand and memorize something, let say 10,00,000 neurons of brain are working to grasp them and understand them and memorize them. Now, whenever we try to recall it, another set of neurons becomes active and tries to pull out information from storage of the brain. Now, each time we try to retrieve the information (commanding our brain to recall something), the recalling network of neurons becomes more and more active and efficient. Not only that, but also the storage neurons and cells becomes more receptive to information.
For example, what we do in business when the workload increases and becomes unmanageable by the current workforce?, we employ more people, logical, isn’t it? Now, exactly the same thing happens in brain. When we were child, we used to remember only small amount of information, and now at this level while we do higher studies trying to learn more and more day by day, we need to recall more amount of data and information than ordinary people do (many people think Chartered Accountants are superhumans, lol, but its not so). When we try to store and recall more and more information, our brain understands that the poor fellow is in need to remember so many things and we have employed only few million neurons for the process. Let’s do one thing, employ more neurons to the process and also make them more efficient. And as a result what ultimately happens is that your brain becomes more efficient and can recall better. The cells and neurons doing the job of memorizing and recalling become more and more efficient as per the needs.
Your duty is to ask the brain to recall every now and then. After every hour of study. Simple idea but great results.

     2.       Facing the frustration and Brain Adaptation phase:

Friends, trust me on this, I have gone through the frustration of not been able to recall a tenth of what I had studied. In continuation to above process (strengthening of recalling process), I started applying the technique of trying to recall every now and then. Many times, I tried to recall what I have studied in last hour. I used to take five minutes break and ponder upon what have I leant in whatever 6-7 pages of reading in last one hour.
What I found initially is that I used to forget almost 85% (what 15% remained was concept of what was read). I found it really frustrating initially. But, I gave it a thought calmly and told myself that “Look Rajesh, its better to face this frustration in preparation time rather than facing it in exam hall. The brain will need training and time in remembering important things and adapting itself in bunch of sizy books. After all, ICAI won’t give you this prestigious degree just for reading these stuffs of 1.5 KGs each and vomiting up in papers, lol. (I did not weighed my books, but on an average it must be weighing 1.5 KGs each)”
Phase of Adaptation: I really thank Dr. Charles Darwin for putting in efforts and give to the world ‘evolutionary theory’. He made me think that human body can adapt in any situations, any weather. Where I applied this theory was to the brain’s functioning and development. Initially, while you start studying the unending portion of CA final, you brain starts saying – “Enough, enough, please, oh god, enough for the day, I can’t resist much.” And you start feeling sleepy. Ok. And you sleep for a while. Again you will roll up your sleeves and try to read and understand many more complex things. Again after an hour or so your brain starts chattering “Oh lord, somebody tell this chap am not capable of bearing with this much tortures in a single day” and you feel like throwing your books and go and take a break. Ok. You took a break. Come again and this process is continued several number of times. Lol.
If you are a qualified CA, you must be laughing by now (or at least smiling) and if you are a student, you must have got scared from the story. But never mind, the adaptation theory works perfectly for human brains also as it does to human body. It adapts to the situations and takes the load you give it. It’s just a matter of time and the brain becomes used to it. And then the pleasant journey begins and your mind becomes your friend.

The formula for Surviving through the stage: At this stage, people always feels frustrated, however, don’t quit, its just brain’s little tricks to reason out its inability and lack of willingness. But perseverance will take you through it. Sail through this stage and victory is ensured. Give yourself little time to settle down and start practicing to recall very often.
I hope I will be able to add many more interesting things to this as and when I come across and remember. Will keep on updating the file for the benefit of others.

Closing Remarks: This is a personal experience I have shared from my study days for the benefit of the students and all those professional fellows who can be benefited by learning the principles behind working memory. If it helps you, kindly send your feedback on my email or phone number. I would be more than happy to hear that my efforts are helping people.

CA Journey and The Career Ahead – In My Words - CA Kaushal Raiyarela

Article by CA Kaushal Raiyarela, Cleared exams in Mumbai now doing Job in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. We heartily thank him for his time in writing his experience and benefiting students and all the professionals who are reading this.

Chartered Accountancy – “CA” is a very renowned and valued degree in India as well as in many other countries other than India. And hence it is also a fact that same is believed to be one of the toughest exams in India especially in Commerce stream. However, this should never de-motivate any student from joining it. There are many aspects of “CA” Curriculum which actually makes it interesting at the same time very important for professional life. As a qualified Chartered Accountant, I am feeling privileged in sharing my experiences and thoughts of this course pre joining, post joining and post qualification. I hope that this would be helpful to many other students who are aspiring to become a Chartered Accountant.

I have segregated this article in various phases to have better understanding for each and every student at various stages of his / her studies.

1      Joining:
After completing 10th standard, people were forcing me to go for Science stream considering my results. I had been relatively bright student during my school days and had scored relatively good marks in all important exams till 10th. However, personally, I was never interested in any of Science subjects and I was not even confident of getting good results. Hence, I end up joining commerce stream post which I developed my likings for Accountancy and Finance subjects.

Choose a stream to which you can connect yourself:

This is my advice to each and every student to pursue career in a stream to which you can connect. Apart from those who have joined Commerce stream already, they should go for this course again if they think they find suitable career in that and not only for the sake of others who are forcing them to join or just because they don’t find any other option. At the same time, I have seen students who do not go for this course just because they feel it is very tough and he/she is not capable of clearing this exam, although they have likings for CA subjects. One will always be able to clear CA if they like the subjects, its not rocket science we cannot comprehend.

Requirement of studying 14-16 hours is a myth:

Moreover, although it is one of the toughest exams, it doesn’t mean that one has to read 16-18 hours daily. Many students do not join only because they heard people saying that one has to put in that many hours in study daily. This is not true. To clear CA examination only important thing is development of good understanding of all concepts. So if anyone who feels he/she has good understanding / liking for Finance, Accounts, Taxation, Law etc., can join the course and clear it with reasonably sufficient efforts.

      2. Pursuing CA (Post Joining):

Advisable to Join along with Graduation:

Ideally it is advisable to join CA before or along with your Graduation. However, for those who have already started their graduation, it is never too late. Benefits of early joining are first of all, possibility of completing course at reasonable age i.e between 22-24 years which I should consider ideal. Post Graduation, it will get delayed; however, it doesn’t mean its value diminish. Moreover, most of the time, curriculum of CA course around 30% is similar to Graduation subjects and hence it always helps.

Importance of Coaching Classes:

Nowadays, there are many CA coaching classes. There is no harm in joining any of the CA coaching classes. Coaching classes always help students in completion of courses in time. Another benefit of Coaching classes as that they are very much objective and exam oriented and hence student get good insight of past exam trends and patterns and also it enables them to identify important topics and questions. Also from other students, many important information and updates are available.

Inability to Join Coaching Classes cannot stop you from becoming CA:

However, those who do not want to join or because of some or the other reason cannot join Coaching classes should not get demoralised. Self-Study also has its own benefits such as understanding of each and every basic concepts and principles which are normally not taught in Coaching classes. However, it is always recommended that those who do not join coaching classes, should keep themselves updated by meeting other students in colleges and libraries.

Regular Studies are important and not 14-16 hours a day, conceptual clarity is must:

As mentioned above, it is not necessary that one has to read 14-16 hours every day to succeed. However, CA curriculum is lengthy except CPT, hence, it is difficult to study whole syllabus at last moment. Hence, regular study is advised and same should be revised also. However, one should never mug up. Conceptual understanding is must.

Articleship: This is one of the most important and critical phase of CA course which actually distinguish it from many other courses. As per CA course, student is required to undergo practical training for 3-3.5 years. Lets discuss why articleship is important:

a.    Insight to Practical world: Many other courses have strong curriculum however, it does not either have any practical training as a part of it or it is for very short period. CA student has to do 3 years practical training wherein he gets experience of a CA firm and also industry.
b.   CA Professional with Qualification and 3 years’ experience: 3 years duration is long enough to gain really good experience in any field. Hence, when a student completes 3-3.5 years of articleship and also completes CA examination, he/she has 3 years of experience with him that gives him/her an edge over many other competitive courses like MBA, CS and ICWA.
c.    Useful in Exam Preparation: Because of practical experience of articleship, a student develops practical approach while learning solution of any problem. Majority of subjects in CA have case studies and practical questions such as Audit, Taxation, Accounts, Finance, Law etc. In examination, student is expected to give practical answers and not a bookish answer.
d.   A supportive source of earning: An article gets minimum stipend during this 3 to 3.5 years of articleship. In metro cities, where there is high volume of work, stipend amount is also reasonably high and provides good monetary back up to students to meet its study expenses. This way it makes it possible to each and every student to try his/her best in exams by getting good study material and coaching.
e.   Unreasonable demands of Classes Schedule: However, in some cities and it has been observed that Coaching classes are encouraging students to attend more and more classes and avoid articleship or in some cases Coaching classes have lengthy hours so that students do not get time to go for articleship. This is not at all encouraged. One should join articleship and complete full 3-3.5 years articleship.
f.    Flexibility in articleship is also important: At the same time, it cannot be denied that clearing CA Final exam is always first priority for students. Hence, in my opinion timely study is more important as it is primary requirement to clear exams. This is contradicting to my earlier statement. But, one should join articleship where there is flexibility for studies also. Work while work and study while they are important.
g.    Hyped Craze for Big Four: In metro cities, there is a craze of joining big firms like Big 4 and other large and mid-large firms for articleship. Many students feel frustrated when they do not get articleship in these firms. In my opinion, working in big firms has benefits however at the same time some drawbacks. Due to very heavy workload, students find it difficult to regularly study and do revision. They also get less leaves for exams and ultimately has to appear for many attempts.
h.   Advantages of Small firms: Those working in small firms get good time for studies. Secondly, in small firms there are work benefits such as experience of variety of work, experience of leadership and decision making etc as in smaller firms there is lesser staff. Hence, if someone wants to join bigger firms they should be ready for above consequences and those who cannot join should not at all worry as their career is still on right track.
Curriculum: CA curriculum is split in 3 different exams.

Foundation/CPT: 1st is mainly about fundamentals. It was earlier known as Foundation, than PE1 and now CPT. Major portion of syllabus is same as 11thand 12th standard which covers basic accounting, Communication and Management related topics, Mathematics etc. Purpose behind this examination is to evaluate basic knowledge that student has about these subjects before starting with core subjects.

IPCC/Intermediate and Final Level: Other 2 exams have contents that develop professional expertise in a student. (At IPCC level, institute expects working knowledge from students). These 2 exams, namely IPCC and Final as per current pattern, have subjects like Advanced Accounting with Accounting standard, Auditing and Advance Auditing, Direct and Indirect Taxation, IT and System audit related topics, Financial Management, Costing and Cost Management, Companies Act and related corporate laws etc. At this level, student develops conceptual and practical knowledge of these subjects. Student understand many of these subjects practically during articleship and then in Final exams, majority of these topics are covered in depth and at the same time with broad contents where there is no limitations or boundaries. Once a student completes Final examination, he/she is expected to have thorough knowledge of all the above subjects and hence same is tested during Final examination where students are expected to apply their practical learning during articleship along with theoretical and conceptual knowledge.

CA Institution has been very efficient in designing the whole syllabus which has covered almost each and every aspect of professional life of a Chartered Accountant.

General Mangement and Communication Skills (GMCS):

This is also a very interesting aspect of CA course. People used to say or rather it was widely believed that CA students and professionals are best at knowledge and solution providing however, when it comes to presentation and Communication and also PR, students from other fields i.e MBAs etc have edge of Chartered Accountants. In there is no doubt that these qualities are must in any field, business, profession and in any part of the world. Institute started GMCS to impart Communication and Management related training to students pursuing CA to develop abovementioned skills also and to compete in the professional world. This training is for 15 days which is also very helpful as explained above and students should attend and participate in this programs. Institute has also started Residential Program where above trainings are given for 3 months for which Institute has a tie up with a reputed Management Institute.

Information Technology Training: IT has become backbone of almost all industry and Finance and Accountancy is also not exception to this. Accounting is being done on high end softwares like ERP and many other communications and presentations are done through IT based instruments. Hence knowledge of these things is very important for each and every individual. For CA, it has 2 dimensional important i.e 1. As a user 2. As an auditor to check authenticity and reliability. CA institute understood this fact and hence incorporated IT training where student gets basic Computer related training which will enable them to efficiently execute and perform their professional duties.

Post Qualification: Completion of all the above results in a dynamic professional called Chartered accountant who are expected to have solution for each and every business related problems.

A qualified Chartered Accountant has ‘N’ number of career options due to wide array of subjects and topics which are learnt practically and theoretically during above mentioned process. I had been told by one Practicing Chartered Accountant that a Chartered Accountant can pursure his career in as many as 130 different fields. Obviously I did not list down them but this suggests that what is the scope for a Chartered Accountant in Indian economy and at the same time it carries responsibility and expectations.

Next small portion of this article is the last but most important aspect in my opinion. Many students feel that once they have completed their CA, everything is complete and same is the case with parents of these students. However, as explained above, true test is Post Qualification only. As I mentioned that there are multiple options for a Chartered Accountant, this can work negatively also if a correct path is not chosen. A qualified CA many a times gets attracted to good Salary packages etc during campus interviews and accepts offer in a field in which he is not interested. For example, someone who wants to joing banking sector end up in an Internal audit of Manufacturing sector. Ultimately in long run, he will get frustrated of his work and it becomes difficult to find job in field of his interest. Hence, it is always advised that one should be patient and smart in chosing jobs or career paths.

I had mentioned earlier that, there is nothing wrong in working in small firms during articleship. However, one can get good experience post qualification also. For that, many CAs work in mid-size CA firms to get better experience which they could not get during articleship. Initially he/she may feel that it is waste of time but in future this experience always helps. Hence, it is my advise to each and every person that on completion of CA, choosing right field and right career path is utmost important and most critical of all.

I wish all the above information is helpful to each and every person for whom it is meant to be. I would like to emphasize on the fact that there is no one thing right or wrong as long as one achieves success with other alternatives. However, above is my view point and experience about Chartered Accountancy course.

Kindly keep reading for other articles on Exam preparation, Reading Material etc.

Thank You.

Science Behind Sleep - Why Adequate Sleep is Required?

Based on a talk delivered by Prof. Russel Fosters on ted.com

What is adequate sleep?

Many scientists agrees that 8 hours is quite sufficient and varies from 6.5 hours to 8 hours from person to person. He also mentioned that teenagers needs 9 hours of sleep. Normally, an average person spends 36% of time sleeping. If you are 90 in age, 32 years will have been spent entirely asleep.

Why study of Sleep is Important?

We spend approx. 36% of our life sleeping, so naturally, it makes perfect sense to study what happens during sleep and how it really affects our life, i.e. the other 64% of our life when we actually perform our daily duties and work.

Why do we sleep?

There are dozens of different ideas about why we sleep. We are discussing only the three major concepts.

1. Restoration Process – During the hours when we are awake, we burn up energy, cell and much more. Many kinds of genes are observed to be turned on only during the sleep and those genes are associated with restoration and metabolic pathways. (Meaning of metabolic process: This includes processes for cell growth, reproduction, response to environment, survival mechanisms, sustenance, and maintenance of cell structure and integrity. It is made up of two categories: catabolism and anabolism.) So, scientifically proved that there are evidences of the concept of restoration.

2. Energy Conservation – As per the latest researches, it has been discovered that we save 135 calories while asleep. (On an average we require around 2200 to 2700 calories.) So, to conclude, only a little energy is saved because of sleep. And the concept doesn’t stand true as expected.

3.  Brain processing and memory consolidation: After experiments, a conclusion was arrived that if you deprive someone of sleep when that person is trying to learn new tasks, the ability to learn that task is weakened greatly. Memory consolidation means that whatever we have learned is properly organized in the brain during sleep. So sleep plays vital role in retention of learning and memory consolidation. (This means that while studying variety of subjects and variety of new things in CA curriculum, we desperately require adequate sleep, and for better retention of learning and better memory functioning, adequate sleep is of prime importance).  It’s not just about learning and memory. What's turned out to be really exciting is that our ability to come up with novel solutions to complex problems is hugely enhanced by a night of sleep. In fact, it's been estimated to give us a threefold advantage. (1) Sleeping at night enhances our creativity. (2) And the brain cells and neural connections that has been established during the day time is enhanced, linked and strengthened during the sleep. At the same time, the less important neural connections we had during the day time fades away, so that other parts can function optimally. The most important thing is that brain doesn’t stop functioning while we are asleep. In fact, some areas of the brain are more active during the sleep state than the wake state.

Is sleepiness an illness?

No, He says feeling sleepiness even during the day is not illness. It just says that your body clock is asking for sleep for some vital functions to happen in your body. If you don’t allow, it will result in micro sleeps (3-5 seconds sleep). That’s not illness. Sleep is a natural process inevitable for the body. Unknowingly by treating sleep as our enemy, we are endangering ourselves in greater problems. This needs mention here because most of the people think of sleep and oversleep problems as illness that needs cure (of course, if you are unable to sleep, that is a big problem that needs cure).

Why people think of Sleep as Illness or waste of time?

Because, we think that we don’t do any activities in that particular time of sleep. But actually speaking, sleep is incredible part of our biology.

What about current situations in the world?

Normally, a human being needs at least eight hours of sleep, while we take on an average 6 to 7 hours of sleep, which is not sufficient for human body and its vital functions. For teenagers, the scenario is worse, they require at least 9 hours of sleep for full brain performance, but most of the times teenagers sleeps even lesser than 6 hours most of the time. It’s simply not enough.

What about Aged people?

It is a myth to assume that aged people requires lesser sleep. That’s a complete myth. Its true that aged people cannot sleep at a stretch for longer period of time. For this reason, people start assuming that aged people require less sleep.

What are the results of taking lesser sleep than required?

The brain indulges itself into micro sleeps, this involuntarily falling asleep and you have no control over it. Its not just embarrassing but can be deadly. It's been estimated that 31 percent of drivers will fall asleep while driving at least once in their life. In U.S., the statistics are pretty astonishing, 100,000 accidents each year on the freeway have been associated with tiredness, loss of vigilance, and falling asleep. Investigations behind Chernobyl blast and mishap of Challenger Space Shuttle show that they were caused by poor judgment as a result of extended shift work and loss of vigilance and tiredness. So when you're tired, and you lack sleep, you have poor memory, you have poor creativity, you have increased impulsiveness, and you have overall poor judgement.

So, to conclude, we should take proper sleep.

Inspiring Stories of CAs - First Story - Prema Jayakumar

CA Prema Jayakumar (CA Final 1st Ranker, Nov’ 2012)
Let me put some facts to the reader and then will proceed for lessons out of the same.
Ms. Prema is from very normal family of four family members, her parents and her younger brother. Her father Jayakumar Perumal is from Tamil Nadu, and was an auto driver for 20 years. Her mother used to work for a private company. She later stopped working later on for health reasons. They lived in a very small house in Malad, Mumbai (India).

With these given facts, it’s very easy to make you think on this. This case really inspires me at this very moment (even though its almost five years I have cleared my CA). This story really motivates me to believe that if you want to give your 100% to something, then you can achieve anything. Not just studies but for me, it is a lifetime lesson, a true inspiration. A candidate with moderate amount of available resources but abundance of confidence and dedication can of course create history. This gives me at least a fair bit of idea about the motive behind her hard work. Am sure she would be working hard in studies just to see her family a lot happier at later stage when she becomes a chartered accountant. This has served as a great motivator for her. I have seen many chartered accountants studying in my hostel had this purpose in their mind, to make their family so richer and happier that they would never have imagined as possible (To admit, I was one of them). This one thought of making others happier (especially parents) can move mountains. Based on this thought, all other things are just branches of the big tree. If you are firm on the grounds on which your actions are based, all other thing happens automatically.

“Faith allows things to happen, it is the power that comes from a fearless heart and when a fearless heart believes, miracles happen. (Shared this message which I happen to receive from one of my friend at the time when I was typing this article)

Which Reference Books are good? (Since this post is not exhaustive, we will keep on updating this post from time to time) in case of any questions or suggestions to be asked, kindly email on inspiringcastudents@gmail.com

CA Sudhir Rajpopat: People sometimes ask their friends for reference books and they use it blindly without even knowing the facts about authors or without knowing the book contents. Ideally one should do whatever he/she is comfortable with and not what your friends are comfortable with.

CA Rajesh Pabari: Choosing reference books should be based on opinions obtained from at least five to ten persons. Preliminary knowledge about the length of the book and your requirements out of it should be clarified first. The same should be evaluated with your time availability.

Arti Jain, 2nd Rank, CA Final, Nov 2011 suggested reading:
·         Munish Bhandari for Law
·         Bangar & Bangar for IDT
·         The Institute's Study Modules & Practise Manuals for all other subjects
Maitreyee Rajput, 1st Rank, CA Final, November 2011 suggested reading:
·         Direct Taxes: Vinod Gupta
·         Accounts (Accounting standards): D S Rawat & M P Vijaykumar
·         Indirect Taxes: Dipak Gupta
·         Law: Munish Bhandari
·          ICAI practice manuals
·    ICAI publications (Recent circulars, notifications, case laws, suggested answers and RTP)
·         Coaching class notes
CA Charmy Sheth, 3rd Rank, CA Final, November 2011: Don’t go for random study. There are limitless books in the market. Believe me 90% the books will say the same thing. When I go to a book store I check how I feel about the book – format, font, readable quality. Shuffling books – is sheer wastage of time and energy. So, settle down with one book. Suggested reading:
·         ICAI Study Modules/Practice Manuals
·         Advanced Auditing and Professional Ethics: VK Agarwal
·         Corporate and Allied Laws: Munish Bhandari
CA Mridu Garg 2nd Rank Holder, CA Final, November 2013: CA Institute’s practice materials, RTPs and the mock tests with the CDs that they initiate, that had been a big help that takes place in the month of September. That was indeed a big help because you got to know where you stand.

Why Articleship is Important

Balance between Articleship and your studies (Helps understand various subjects like Direct Taxes, Accounting, Finance, Indirect Taxes, Helps to handle pressure situations)
Exposure to Finance and Practical Accounting: The articleship is the most crucial part of CA programme. Students get excellent exposure to various areas of finance and accounting. It would be difficult to swim in the accounting world, if you don’t have a hand-on-experience. - CA Maitreyee Rajput, 1st Rank, CA Final, November 2011
Building Confidence and Handle Pressure Situations, helps technical and conceptual understanding: Practical experience gained during Articleship really helped during the preparation of CA final exam. It helped in building the confidence required to handle and sustain pressure situations, how to meet deadlines and managing time effectively. These qualities acquired at the workplace were very helpful in studies straightaway. Doing an articleship sincerely did help a lot not only in developing technical understanding and conceptual clarity of the subjects we studied.  - CA Pawan Sarda, 2nd Rank, CA Final, November 2011
Helps understand complex theoretical Concepts: Some people ignore Articleship to focus on theory subjects. But I took articleship very seriously and it enhanced my practical knowledge and its applicability.  It also helped me to understand complex theoretical concepts. - CA Arti Jain, 2nd Rank, CA Final, November 2011.
Articleship plays a very important role in CA student’s life because I got much benefit in subjects like DT, IDT because there you can get practical exposure in office. It was something very brilliant especially in Direct tax, IDT. So, articleship plays a very important role. - CA Gaurav Shrawagi, 1st Rank, CA Final, November 2013
Coping up with Articleship phase and its importance– CA Charmy Sheth, 3rd Rank, CA Final, November 2011:
My articleship at Purvesh & Associates, Borivali, Mumbai was icing on the cake – It gave me practical exposure on audit and taxation. The audit and income tax paper was a breeze. My boss, who is also an All India ranker was a great motivator at work. Positive colleagues and meeting clients helped me gain confidence. Indeed, I got a good grip on the subject and work life. But at the end of the end, both coaching and articleship is important, but it is supplementary.
On an average I spent 15 hours starting from college and ending at office. The schedule was very hectic at times as office comes with endless responsibilities. To prove myself at both places was a real challenge. I never wanted to compromise one for the other. So, I made sure that I attended my college lectures regularly. Luckily, it was not a lonely journey – as 90% were CA students in my college (Narsee Monjee College of Commerce and Economics, Mumbai). We shared similar sentiments.

Facing the Exams

Facing the exams
(Solve Everything, write every answer and Devote Calculated time to each question)
CA Pawan Sarda, 2nd Rank, CA Final, November 2011: We need to solve everything of the Question Paper because even if you don’t know the answer you can at least write something, there will be hardly anything in the paper which you will be completely blank about.
One more thing was that those 3 hours during the exams are very crucial. Whatever you study during those one or two years won’t does not count if you do not do well in the 3 hours. So, I had planned that if you have 180 minutes for 100 marks paper, you have 1.8 minutes for each mark and hence, you can calculate for a 5 mark question you have 9 minutes in hand, for 10 marks question you have 18 minutes. So, while giving the answers we can keep a track of time of how much paper is completed and how much is remaining and accordingly we give importance to each and every mark. This is very important because if you skip 15-20 marks paper unattended then automatically the examiner will assess you on 80-85 marks. If you have attended 95-100 marks, naturally there are more chances of getting higher scores.

Yoga Exercies and Pranayam Helps, Keep Cool and Calm before going to exam hall: CA Charmy Sheth, 3rd Rank, CA Final, November 2011: “My regular yoga exercises helped me release out all worries. I used to do pranayams before I left for exam.  I was very calm, relaxed during my exams. I would not carry any materials to my exam hall. I would rather break my calm cycle if I start flipping pages at my exam hall. I believe you just have to give your best and rest will fall in its place.”
CA Gaurav Shrawagi, 1st Rank, CA Final, November 2013.

Sequence of Attempting in papers: “I always used to do those questions which I was very confident of. I didn’t follow the questions serially. I used to start with only that question which I was very confident of because once you start writing question it helps saving time and in solving those other questions later. So, I used to start with those questions that were very easy for me.

Revision and Managing things on Exam days

Importance of revision on last day:
CA Pawan Sarda: If you study something for 4 months but if you don’t study the same thing just before the exam it could possible a biggest mistake because when you go into the exam you should have the confidence that you have read everything, everything should be fresh in your mind. After you attend one paper, you will get at least 20 hours’ time for the next paper. Plan your revision techniques in such a manner that the whole portion can be revised in those 20 hours.

CA Jay Kothari (Mumbai): You can select some easy topics which can be studied on exam’s previous day. On the exam day, from morning till exam time, most important things should be studied like those things that need to be focused without a choice e.g. important recent case laws, formulae, important sections, ratios, percentages etc.

CA Rajesh Pabari: In some subjects, it’s near to impossible to revise the entire portion in last one and half day before the exam. For ex. Direct Taxation of CA final, in this kind of subjects, you need be sure that you have conceptually understood everything and can answer any type of questions that you may come across. Understanding various concepts in clear manner helps it remain longer in our brain and it can be easily applied to any practical situations when asked to. Make sure you have prepared your notes or at least highlighted important paragraphs in your reference books which you think you need to revise at last moments. Again, you have to plan in such a way that even important selected readings are completed in available time. If possible, kindly do mock revision to check whether you are able to revise the subject in 20 hours time.

One important tip I want to share here. Whenever you read any paragraphs in theory books, highlight only few key words of the para in such a way that when you re-read those paragraphs, you should be able to recall the full paragraphs just by reading those four to five highlighted words. This will greatly improve time management while revising the subjects.

CA Gaurav Shrawagi, 1st Rank, CA Final, November 2013.

During the exams, don’t try to leave anything; you have only 20 hours to revise the whole content. One should go through all those contents of the portion which you have read at least twice or thrice. Don’t go for a new book or content for that one day or 20 hours, you are not going to get much out of that new book. Go through the short notes and highlighted important portions because for subjects like DT, SFM, you have really very short time to prepare. So, Its beneficial greatly if you have taken down important points so as to recollect all those points just before exam day.

CA Charmy Sheth, 3rd Rank, CA Final, November 2011:  I observed that a one-day preparatory holiday is not enough for most students. And the reason is that they do not plan well. Last-minute studies require a good planning.

Strategy during the exams (Plan studies, Take Proper Rest, Sleep Well, Don’t Panic): Dhruv Jain, 2nd Rank, IPCE, November 2013
Schedule Plan, Hourly Targets: “I prepared a planned schedule for myself which I used to maintain in my diary. My exams started from 6th Nov and we got a gap of one and a half day before each exam. After the exams got over, I used to return home by 6 and then sit for study from 6 to 11 PM. I had already planned what topics I have to go through from each subject on an hourly basis during each exam and this is how I have retained my strategy.”

It’s All Mind Managing Game: “One shouldn’t panic during the exams as this can lower your confidence. Proper sleep is must as one shouldn’t take his/her health at stake. I have seen some of my friends who didn’t use to sleep or take rest during exams and ultimately this affected their other incoming exams and their health too. So, I would suggest – don’t panic, take proper sleep and then study well”.
